Benedict Cumberbatch Reads Alexei Navalny’s Final Letter

Alexei Navalny was a prominent Russian opposition leader, lawyer, anti-corruption activist, and political prisoner. Listen to Benedict Cumberbatch read one of his final letters before his death. Pretty powerful stuff.

Navalny rose to prominence in the early 2000s by exposing corruption within the Russian government and powerful businesses. He utilized his legal background and investigative skills to uncover financial wrongdoing, often through his Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK). His investigations, widely publicized online, gained him a significant following and made him a thorn in the side of President Vladimir Putin’s regime.

In 2020, Navalny narrowly survived a poisoning with the nerve agent Novichok, a substance banned by international treaties. Investigations by independent organizations concluded that the Russian state was responsible. This brazen attack sparked international outrage and further strained relations between Russia and the West.

Alexei Navalny’s Political Aspirations and Imprisonment

Navalny’s popularity fueled his political ambitions. He advocated for democratic reforms, criticized human rights abuses, and campaigned against Putin’s government. However, his attempts to run for office were repeatedly thwarted by the authorities, often citing trumped-up charges. In 2021, upon returning to Russia from seeking medical treatment in Germany for a poisoning attack, he was arrested and imprisoned on what were widely seen as politically motivated charges.

A Symbol of Resistance

Despite his imprisonment and declining health, Navalny remained a potent symbol of opposition to Putin’s government. His courage and determination in the face of persecution inspired many both within Russia and abroad. Sadly, in February 2024, Alexei Navalny passed away while still in prison. At the time of writing this, it was suggested that Alexei died from cardiac arrest.

Alexei Navalny’s legacy is complex. He remains a controversial figure in Russia, admired by some as a champion of democracy and reviled by others as a foreign-backed troublemaker. However, there’s no denying his impact on Russian politics. He raised awareness about corruption, inspired a generation of activists, and exposed the authoritarian nature of the Putin regime to the world. His story is a powerful reminder of the fight for freedom and the price some pay for speaking truth to power.
